Rays 5, Red Sox 1: David Price pitched a complete game and Wil Myers drove in two as visiting Tampa Bay pulled within a half-game of Boston in the American League East.
Price (5-5) became the second left-hander in the last three games to toss a complete game against the Red Sox after teammate Matt Moore pitched a shutout in the series opener. Price allowed one run on five hits and struck out four over 97 pitches for the Rays, who have won seven of their last eight.
Myers delivered the key hit in a three-run rally in the third and James Loney and Jose Molina each added an RBI single in the eighth for Tampa Bay. Yunel Escobar provided the highlight on defense with a behind-the-back toss from his glove to second baseman Ben Zobrist to help kill a Boston rally in the fourth.
Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes misplayed a ball in left field that allowed Desmond Jennings to reach with one out in the third and Evan Longoria followed with a single to start the uprising. Ben Zobrist’s bunt loaded the bases before Myers dumped a bloop single into center to plate a pair and Luke Scott hit a sacrifice fly.
Mike Napoli hit a solo home run over the Green Monster seats in left in the seventh and Felix Doubront (7-4) suffered the loss for the Red Sox, surrendering three runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Red Sox and 2B Dustin Pedroia finalized a contract that will pay him $110 million over eight years through the 2021 season. He is the first second baseman in history to sign a contract worth $100 million or more. … Tampa Bay starters have allowed three or fewer earned runs in 29 of the last 32 games. … Boston RHP Andrew Bailey underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on Wednesday. Fellow Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz (shoulder) played catch on flat ground and will have another throwing session from flat ground before getting back on a mound.
