Mariners 9, Angels 4: John Jaso belted a two-run homer and added an RBI double in a four-run seventh inning that broke the game open as visiting Seattle handed Los Angeles a damaging loss for its playoff hopes.
Jaso hit his 10th homer in the fourth for the Mariners, who salvaged the last of a three-game series after dropping the first two. Kyle Seager added two hits for Seattle, including an RBI single in the seventh as the Mariners took a 7-2 lead.
Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma (8-5) allowed seven hits and two runs – one earned – over six innings for the win. That performance kept the Angels two games behind Oakland in the American League wild-card race and ended their five-game win streak.
Seattle went ahead for good 3-2 in the fifth on a fielder’s choice by Franklin Gutierrez. In the bottom of the inning, Gutierrez made a tremendous running catch on Mike Trout before crashing into the center field wall. Gutierrez left the game in the sixth with an apparent wrist injury.
Angels starter Dan Haren (12-12), who came into the game 4-1 since Aug. 31, allowed six hits and three runs – two earned -- over 5 1/3 innings. Garrett Richards gave up three runs on three hits in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Albert Pujols and Kendrys Morales each had a pair of doubles for the Angels. … Seattle OF Casper Wells had two hits for the second time in five games. … The Angels are 10-6 against the Mariners in 2012. They will travel to Seattle for the final three games of the season Oct. 1-3.
