Rays 3, Angels 2: Jeremy Hellickson pitched six strong innings, outdueling C.J. Wilson to help Tampa Bay to its fourth straight victory.
The Rays, who have won six of seven, took the lead in the third inning on a solo home run by Ben Zobrist and an RBI double by Jeff Keppinger. That was enough for Hellickson (3-0), who gave up one run in six innings and allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five.
Evan Longoria tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning when pinch hitter Brandon Allen walked with the bases loaded against Angels reliever Jason Isringhausen. Wade Davis and Joel Peralta each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for Tampa Bay to set the table for Fernando Rodney, who recorded his sixth save despite allowing a run on a Zobrist error with two out.
Vernon Wells hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for Los Angeles, ending the Raysβ streak of 55 innings without allowing a round-tripper. The Angels could not plate another run, however, going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Angels starter C.J. Wilson (2-2) went seven innings, yielding two runs on six hits. He struck out 11, one short of his career high, and walked two.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Angels 1B Albert Pujols went 0-for-3 with a walk, his fifth straight game without a hit, dropping his average to .222 ... Allen was making his first appearance for the Rays since being claimed off waivers from Oakland last week ... Tampa Bay catcher Chris Gimenez threw out both runners attempting to steal against him.
