Preseason first-team All-ACC selection PJ Hall led the way for the Clemson Tigers with 20 points and five rebounds as they took down the visiting Winthrop Eagles 78-56 on Monday in the season opener for both teams.
Ian Schieffelin (16 points), RJ Godfrey (12) and Chase Hunter (10) joined Hall as the only members of Brad Brownell's team to eclipse double digits. Senior guard Alex Hemenway contributed nine points, all of which came from behind the 3-point arc.
Senior guard Kasen Harrison did the heavy lifting for the Eagles offensively, dropping in both of his 3-point attempts en route to a team-leading 15-point performance. Junior forward KJ Doucet added 12 points as the only other Winthrop player in double figures.
Senior center Alex Timmerman put together a strong showing as well for the Eagles, racking up six points and seven rebounds.
Monday's win marks the fourth season-opening victory in a row for the Tigers, while the Eagles have now lost back-to-back openers.
Both teams will be back in action later this week as Winthrop hosts Division III foe Brevard College and Clemson travels to take on UAB in the Asheville Championship.
