No. 23 Baylor limited New Mexico State to one basket in the first six minutes of the game and held on for a 85-70 win on Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.
The Bears maintained a double-digit lead throughout most of the game, but the Aggies didn't go away. Guard Ian Baker's 3-point jumper with 5:39 left cut Baylor's lead to 71-64. But Bears guard Taurean Prince answered with a 3 to push the lead back to 10 and Baylor cruised from there.
Prince, who entered the game averaging 14.6 points per game, led Baylor with 34 points. Three other Bears scored in double figures: guard Ishmail Wainwright had 14 and guards Lester Medford and Al Freeman each totaled 10.
Forward Pascal Siakam led New Mexico State with 26 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bears jumped out early and Prince's layup with 14:14 left in the first half gave them an 18-2 lead.
New Mexico State struggled from the field, making 8 of 20 in the first half, and would have trailed by more had they not connected on 14 of 16 free throws.
Baylor shot 48.5 percent from the field in the first half and made 9 of 10 free throws.
The Bears, who led the nation in assists per game with 22.5, finished with 24 assists, including 12 from Medford.
