Freshman guard Malik Newman scored 20 points to lead Mississippi State to a 93-69 victory over visiting Northern Colorado on Wednesday night at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Miss.
Senior forward Gavin Ware had 19 points, six rebounds and three steals for Mississippi State (6-5). Senior guard Fred Thomas added 13 points, and freshman guard Quinndary Weatherspoon had 10.
Junior guard Dallas Anglin scored 13 points for Northern Colorado (3-9). Freshman guard Jordan Davis and junior guards Jordan Wilson and Anthony Johnson had 11 points apiece.
Northern Colorado jumped out to a 5-0 lead and still led by one with 16:19 to play in the opening half, but Mississippi State mounted an 8-0 run to go up 16-9 on a 3-pointer by Newman. The Bulldogs took a 22-14 lead on a layup by Ware and stretched the margin to 10 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Thomas.
Mississippi State carried a 49-34 lead into the break and continued to build on its advantage in the second half. The Bulldogs went up 59-39 on a 3-pointer by Newman with 17:33 to go and took an 87-57 lead on a layup by Thomas with 3:57 remaining.
