No. 24 Texas 55, Fresno State 53: Sheldon McClellan made all 14 of his free-throw attempts and scored 20 points as the host Longhorns staved off an upset bid by the Bulldogs in the season opener for both teams.
Jonathan Holmes had a game-high 14 rebounds for Texas, which played without starting point guard Myck Kabongo. The sophomore star is sitting out while being investigated for his relationship with a professional agent.
Freshman guard Marvelle Harris scored a team-high 11 points for the Bulldogs, who pulled within 52-50 with 49 seconds remaining after Jerry Brown made one of two free throws. Kevin Olekaibe missed a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left that would have tied the game.
Javan Felix scored eight of his 10 points in the first half and had nine rebounds for Texas, which made only one of its 13 3-point attempts. Both teams shot less than 37 percent from the field.
Olekaibe and Kevin Foster combined to score only 10 points on 4-of-27 shooting for Fresno State, which was 5-of-19 shooting from beyond the arc. Foster led the Bulldogs with 11 rebounds.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas improved to 13-2 in season openers under coach Rick Barnes. …Longhorns sophomore forward Jaylen Bond missed the game with an ankle injury. … Olekaibe had seven points after averaging a team-high 17.8 last season.
