Anthony James led five players in double figures with 18 points to propel host Northern Iowa an 80-60 victory over in-state rival Iowa.
Northern Iowa proved too much from beyond the arc, hitting 60 percent from the perimeter in the first half and finishing 11-for-21. Forward Jake Koch chipped in 13 points, knocking down three 3-pointers for the Panthers (8-1), who extended their winning streak to seven.
The Panthers led 32-27 at the break but erupted for a 21-2 run midway through the second half. Northern Iowa's aggressiveness helped draw 25 fouls and the Panthers converted 29 of 33 from the foul line.
Iowa (5-4) has lost four of its last six games overall. The Hawkeyes have now dropped two straight to Northern Iowa, but still lead the all-time series 33-9.
Iowa was efficient from the field, shooting over 50 percent. However, the Hawkeyes went just 1 for 12 from the arc and couldn’t keep up with the Panthers’ 3-point pace.
Iowa sophomore swingman Roy Devyn Marble took over at point guard and posted 14 points, four assists and four rebounds. Eric May chipped in with 10 points for the Hawkeyes.
