Padres 6, Dodgers 3: Jedd Gyorko belted a two-run homer and Andrew Cashner won for the first time in nearly five months as visiting San Diego snapped its six-game losing streak.
Cashner (3-7) allowed two runs and nine hits over seven innings and delivered a two-run double en route to his first win since April 16. Los Angeles pulled within 6-3 on pinch-hitter Justin Turner's RBI single in the ninth, but Kevin Quackenbush struck out Dee Gordon and got Hanley Ramirez to fly out with two on to end the contest.
Adrian Gonzalez homered for the fourth time in as many games for Los Angeles, which saw its lead over San Francisco in the National League West cut to 2 1/2 games. Roberto Hernandez (8-11) lasted just three innings, yielding five runs (two earned) and five hits as the Dodgers’ four-game winning streak came to an end.
The Padres capitalized on two Los Angeles errors in the second inning and took a 3-0 lead as Cashner doubled in two runs before scoring on Cory Spangenberg’s single up the middle. Hernandez encountered trouble again in the third as Yasmani Grandal drew a leadoff walk and Gyorko followed with his 10th home run into the center-field seats.
The Dodgers cut the deficit to 5-2 in the sixth on Gonzalez’s two-run blast before the Padres answered with a run in the eighth against Jamey Wright. Gonzalez is 9-for-29 with four homers and 11 RBIs during his seven-game hitting streak for Los Angeles, which used five pitchers in relief of Hernandez.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cashner owns a 1.89 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season. … RF Matt Kemp went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 15 games for Los Angeles, which has committed five errors over the last two contests. … Padres INF Alexi Amarista snapped an 0-for-18 slump with a second-inning single and finished 1-for-4.
