Tony Gwynn Jr. delivered the go-ahead single to right field in the top of the 11th inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the San Diego Padres 4-2 on Saturday in the completion of a suspended game.
The game was suspended at 4:40 a.m. ET Saturday morning with a runner on first base and no outs in the top of the 10th. It was interrupted by four separate rain delays, including a 28-minute delay prior to the start.
Juan Uribe led off the 11th with a double against Ernesto Frieri (0-1) and Aaron Miles was hit by a pitch one out later.
Sidearmer Pat Neshek entered and struck out Rod Barajas, but Gwynn looped a 1-2 changeup in front of right fielder Will Venable to give Los Angeles the lead. Neshek followed by uncorking a wild pitch that allowed Miles to score.
Blake Hawksworth (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win and Jonathan Broxton logged the 11th for his fourth save in a game that featured 15 pitchers.
Los Angeles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Casey Blake scored on an errant throw by catcher Nick Hundley. San Diego answered in the fifth with two runs on an RBI single by Venable and Ryan Ludwick’s groundout.
Just before the third rain delay of 67 minutes, Los Angeles tied the score in the sixth on Matt Kemp's RBI single.
