Rookie Andrei Svechnikov's first career goal broke a third-period tie, and Warren Foegele scored twice for the Carolina Hurricanes in a wild 8-5 victory against the visiting New York Rangers on Sunday at Raleigh, N.C.

It was the first home victory for first-year coach Rod Brind'Amour as his team overcame a horrid start to send the Rangers to a 0-3 record.

Jordan Martinook, Jordan Staal, Micheal Ferland, Lucas Wallmark and Teuvo Teravainen had the other Carolina goals. Justin Williams notched three assists for the Hurricanes, marking the captain's first points of the season.

Jimmy Vesey and Chris Kreider each scored twice for the Rangers. Pavel Buchnevich also posted a goal for New York. Tony DeAngelo, Kevin Hayes and Jesper Fast each supplied two assists for the Rangers.

Other than Buchnevich's power-play goal, all the game's scoring came in even-strength situations until Teravainen's empty-net, power-play goal with 30 seconds left.

Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek was credited with 19 saves for his first victory with the team.

Kreider's second goal gave the Rangers a 5-4 third-period lead. But just 35 seconds later, the Hurricanes were even on Wallmark's goal.

Svechnikov and Foegele scored in a 47-second span shortly after the third period's midway mark to give Carolina a two-goal edge. The Hurricanes had three goals on their first eight shots of the period.

Rangers goalie Alexandar Georgiev stopped 32 shots. Georgiev, who made his season debut, was the youngest goalie -- 22 years old -- on an opening day roster in the NHL this season.

The Rangers, who swept all four meetings from Carolina last season, recorded 12 first-period shots, but finished with 24. They averaged 40 shots in their first two games.

Vesey scored in the opening minute on a 2-on-1 rush. On New York's second shot, Kreider converted after Carolina center Martin Necas was left out of position.

Foegele's first goal gave Necas, who assisted, his first NHL point .

Martinook pulled the Hurricanes even with 5:46 left in the first period.

New York, which lost 3-1 on Saturday night at Buffalo, wrapped up the first of 11 sets of games on back-to-back days.
