Alexander Semin had two goals and Marcus Johansson scored for the first time in 20 games as the Washington Capitals cruised to a 4-1 victory over the visiting New York Rangers on Wednesday.
Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves to snap the Rangers' five-game winning streak. The Capitals improved to 12-5-1 at home and moved to 6-6-1 under new head coach Dale Hunter.
Semin’s second goal of the game came with less than three minutes to play to secure the victory. Alex Ovechkin picked up his second assist of the night, snapping a 23 game multi-point drought.
Troy Brouwer and Semin scored less than three minutes apart in the second period to give the Capitals a 3-1 lead. Brouwer’s 10th goal of the season came at 10:24 when he deflected defenseman John Carlson's point shot past a helpless Martin Biron. Semin’s first of the night came when he backhanded the puck over Biron on a breakaway.
After Johansson’s seventh goal of the season put the Capitals up 1-0, Brandon Dubinsky tied the game with less than three minutes left in the first period.
The goal was set up when captain Ryan Callahan blocked a shot to send the Rangers on a 2-on-1 advantage. Dubinsky finished off the odd-man rush by snapping his third goal of the season over Vokoun’s glove.
