Dominic Moore tied the game late in regulation and recorded the only shootout goal as the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday.
Mathieu Garon made six of his 28 saves in overtime and stopped two in the shootout for the win.
Moore tied the game 2-2 for the Lightning with a shorthanded goal, flipping a backhander over goalie Henrik Lundqvist’s shoulder with 1:57 remaining in regulation. It was Tampa Bay’s first shorthanded goal of the season and it snapped a 24-game streak without a goal for Moore.
Tampa Bay was without former Hart Trophy winner Marty St. Louis, whose consecutive game streak ended at 499 after he was hit by a puck near the left eye at the morning skate Thursday. St. Louis suffered facial and nasal fractures and is out indefinitely according to the team.
The Rangers had taken a 2-1 lead 13:23 into the second period on Artem Anisimov's shorthanded goal. The Lightning took exception to the goal celebration by Anisimov, who faked a rifle shot at Garon and the goal. That caused a melee that produced almost 40 minutes in penalties.
Rangers’ center Brad Richards had an assist to extend his point streak to seven games.
