The Tampa Bay Lightning scored three times in an 85-second span in the first period and Dwayne Roloson turned aside 31 shots en route to a 5-2 road triumph over the Boston Bruins on Saturday in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.
Sean Bergenheim netted his league-leading eighth goal of the playoffs and defenseman Brett Clark and Teddy Purcell also tallied during the spurt for fifth-seeded Tampa Bay.
Defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron scored a power-play goal and Simon Gagne added an empty-net tally for the Lightning, who have won eight in a row since being pushed to the brink of elimination by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference quarterfinals.
Bergenheim ignited the offensive flurry with 8:45 remaining in the first period.
Defenseman Victor Hedman wired a shot from just outside the right faceoff circle which was denied by Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas. Dominic Moore's rebound was also thwarted, but Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg accidentally kicked the puck right to Bergenheim, who quickly wristed a shot past Thomas for his fourth goal in three games.
That's quite the offensive contribution for the 27-year-old Finn, who only scored 14 goals in 80 games in the regular season.
Clark doubled the advantage just 19 seconds later after he skated into the offensive zone and backhanded a sharp-angle shot which squeezed between Thomas' right arm and body for a soft goal.
Tomas Kaberle then gift-wrapped Tampa Bay's third tally just 66 seconds later as the veteran defenseman lost control of the puck as he attempted to skate in front of the net. Purcell alertly tapped the loose puck just inside the near post for his second goal of the playoffs.
Playing in place of the injured Patrice Bergeron, rookie Tyler Seguin put Boston on the scoreboard with 4:01 remaining in the first period. The second overall pick skated around defenseman Mike Lundin and calmly wired a shot past Roloson to breathe life into the TD Garden faithful.
Defenseman Johnny Boychuk also tallied and Thomas finished with 29 saves for third-seeded Boston, which continued to struggle on the power play. The Bruins failed on all four opportunities with the man advantage on Saturday to fall to 2-for-41 in the playoffs.
The teams will reconvene in Boston on Tuesday for Game 2 of the series.
