Ryan Succop kicked a 30-yard field goal at 9:44 of overtime as the Kansas City Chiefs extended their winning streak to four games with a 23-20 home victory over the San Diego Chargers on Monday night.
After Matt Cassel hit Steve Breaston for 17 yards on 3rd-and-14 to keep the drive alive, Succop booted his third field goal of the game to forge a three-way tie between Kansas City, San Diego and the Oakland Raiders atop the AFC West.
The Chiefs (4-3) are the first team to win four straight games after losing its first three of the season since the 2000 Pittsburgh Steelers.
San Diego (4-3), which trailed 13-3 at halftime after having two drives halted by turnovers deep in Kansas City territory, got within one point as Nick Novak booted three of his four field goals in the third quarter.
Jackie Battle's 1-yard touchdown run with 12 minutes remaining in the fourth put the Chiefs ahead 20-12. But Curtis Brinkley rushed for a 2-yard score less than five minutes later and caught the two-point conversion to forge a tie.
The Chargers were driving for a game-winning field goal attempt in the final minute when Andy Studebaker recovered a fumbled snap by Philip Rivers. Kansas City could not capitalize, however, as Eric Weddle made his second interception of the night at the San Diego 28 with six seconds left.
Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel was 19 of 32 for 261 yards and a touchdown while Battle gained 70 yards on 19 carries.
Rivers completed 26 of 41 passes for 369 yards but threw two interceptions for the fifth time this season. Malcom Floyd made five catches for 107 yards and Ryan Mathews had 112 total yards before leaving with a groin injury.
