Phil Dawson connected on two field goals over 50 yards as the host Cleveland Browns posted a 6-3 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in a defensive slugfest on Sunday.

Montario Hardesty, who was starting in place of an injured Peyton Hillis, rumbled for 95 yards on 33 carries. Cleveland (3-3) held onto the ball for just under 43 minutes thanks to Hardesty and a series of short passes by Colt McCoy.

Charlie Whitehurst started for Seattle (2-4) in place of the injured Tarvaris Jackson and completed just 12 of 30 passes for 97 yards and an interception.

Two of the worst offenses in the NFL lived down to the hype, combining for an average of 3.2 yards per play.

Cleveland took advantage of Whitehurst’s fumble and some good luck to get on the board in the second quarter. The fumble gave the Browns possession near midfield and Seattle was called for a neutral zone infraction on the resulting fourth down, keeping the drive alive.

McCoy managed to get Cleveland just close enough for Dawson to convert from 52 yards out for a 3-0 lead.

The Seahawks would get those three back in the third but Dawson struck again in the fourth, capping an 11-play, 48-yard drive with a 53-yard field goal.

Dawson also had a pair of field goals blocked in the contest.
