Travis Trice and Denzel Valentine added 15 points each for Michigan State (7-0), which shot 63.1 percent from the field without leading scorer Gary Harris, who rested an ankle injury. Adreian Payne chipped in eight points and six rebounds and Branden Dawson grabbed a game-high 10 boards as the Spartans outrebounded Mount. St. Mary's 40-31.
Will Miller paced the Mountaineers (2-6) with 15 points - all coming in the first half on 5-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc - while Julian Norfleet added 13 despite shooting 4-of-15 from the field. Rashad Whack and Byron Ashe had 10 points each for Mount St. Mary's.
The Mountaineers hung around early as Miller's fourth 3-pointer in the opening 5:22 pulled them within 17-16. A Sam Prescott 3 tied the game at 19 with 13:30 left in the first half before two Kenny Kaminski triples sparked an 8-0 Spartans run.
Two Payne 3-pointers and a 9-2 half-closing jaunt gave Michigan State a 50-38 halftime lead, and Mount St. Mary's didn't get back within single digits. Two Trice 3s keyed a 10-0 Spartans run to start the second half as Michigan State pulled away.
