No. 21 Wisconsin 86, St. John's 75: Josh Gasser had 19 points and eight rebounds to help the Badgers
open the season with a non-conference win over the Red Storm at the
Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Wisconsin (1-0) had five players in double figures in the scoring column, with Sam Dekker adding 16 and Ben Brust (15), Duje Dukan (15) and Traevon Jackson (13) each putting forth a solid effort. The Badgers also hit 11 3-pointers in a winning effort.
St. John's (0-1) got 27 points from D'Angelo Harrison while JaKarr Sampson added 21 points and seven boards. No other Red Storm player scored more than six points.
Wisconsin took control in the first half, turning an 11-7 advantage into an 18-point lead with a 22-8 run that spanned 11:05. A quick 8-0 run pulled the Red Storm within 33-23 with 2:03 to go in the half, but Frank Kaminsky's hoop pushed the lead to 12 by halftime.
The second half was much like the first, with Wisconsin holding the lead and holding off St. John's rallies. The Red Storm got the lead down to four with 8:26 to play, but the Badgers responded with eight straight points and were never seriously threatened again.
GAME NOTEBOOK: St. John's F/C Chris Obekpa played for the first time this year after serving a two-game suspension for violation of university policy … Dukan's 15 points established a new career high, eclipsing his previous high of 11. … Wisconsin has won its last 12 season openers, while St. John's fell to 2-2 in openers in the Steve Lavin era.
