Kenny Gabriel recorded the first triple-double in Auburn history with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocks to lead the Tigers to a 67-41 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Monday.
Gabriel, a senior forward, hit his first seven shot attempts of the second half and scored 16 points in the first 9:20. He set his career high in blocks by the end of the first half, set the single-game mark among SEC players this season on a lay up attempt by Ricky Johnson with 15:45 remaining and got his 10th three minutes later.
Gabriel matched his career high in points and rebounds, and added four steals and three assists.
Gabriel’s work in the paint was part of a team-wide defensive clinic against the Wildcats (4-11), who shot 23.7 percent from the field.
The Tigers (10-3) took control with a 16-4 run and built a 27-13 cushion at the 6:34 mark. Gabriel sent the Tigers into the locker room with their largest lead of the half at 34-19 with an easy basket.
Varez Ward had a career-high 10 assists and Chris Denson came off the bench to score 10 points for Auburn, which led by as many as 30.
Johnson led Bethune-Cookman with 17 points.
