With his backcourt mates misfiring, Jared Bynum saved No. 15 Providence as he tallied a career-high 32 points and five steals to give the Friars a 71-52 Big East victory over Georgetown on Sunday in Washington, D.C.
Playing 30 minutes from his home in Largo, Md., Bynum made 7 of 8 shots from beyond the arc, with six of his 3-pointers coming in the second half when first place Providence (20-2, 10-1) pulled away after trailing by three points.
Bynum's play propelled the Friars to their seventh straight win on an afternoon when two of their top three scorers -- Al Durham and A.J. Reeves -- missed their first nine shots.
Bynum was so hot that he even made an accidental shot as his off-target alley-oop try in the second half dropped through the bucket.
With the loss, Georgetown (6-15, 0-10) extended its worst start in conference history. Aminu Mohammed scored 18 points to pace the Hoyas.
Georgetown led at the half, 30-27, and still had the lead with 16:38 left as Donald Carey made a rare 4-point play to make the score 36-34.
But over the next 10:15, the Friars outscored the Hoyas 28-7 with Bynum supplying 21 of the points. During a span of 3:04 to cap the run, Bynum made four straight 3-pointers as he transformed a 50-41 lead to a 62-43 bulge.
Aside from Bynum, the Friars made just 12 of 36 shots (33 percent). They also committed 20 turnovers. But Providence also played strong defense, forcing 19 turnovers and 32.7 percent shooting from beleaguered Georgetown.
Noah Horchler had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Friars. Justin Minaya added 10 points and seven rebounds.
In an evenly contested first half, neither team led by more than five points. Midway through, Georgetown scored seven straight points with Mohammed notching a 3-point play and Collin Holloway adding a pair of fastbreak layups for a 19-14 Hoyas lead.
Minaya ended the Providence drought, which included four turnovers and three missed shots, as he drained an open 3-pointer and then hit another 3, an improbable, shot-clock-beating fall-away heave with a defender in his face to give the lead back to the Friars, 20-19.
