Paris Austin scored 19 points, making all 12 of his free-throw attempts, as California won away from home for the first time this season, holding off a late rally to defeat Washington State 66-57 on Wednesday in Pullman, Wash.
The Golden Bears (11-15, 5-8 Pac-12) snapped a four-game losing streak. Cal was 0-7 on the road and 0-3 on neutral courts entering Wednesday.
Andre Kelly added 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, and Matt Bradley had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Bears. Austin added seven rebounds and three assists.
Junior Tony Miller led Washington State (14-13, 5-9) with 18 points, equaling his career high. The Cougars took their third loss in a row and dropped to 11-4 at home this season.
Washington State's CJ Elleby, third in the conference with an average of 18.7 points per game, had 13 points on 4-for-18 shooting. Elleby grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Cal opened the game with a 15-4 run and never trailed. Kelly made a pair of jumpers during the run, Austin, Grant Anticevich and Kareem South added 3-pointers, and two free throws by Bradley capped the stretch.
A 3-pointer by Elleby, who was 1-for-9 in the half, pulled the Cougars within 15-7, but Cal responded with a 13-4 run, capped by Lars Thiemann's dunk off a turnover, for a 17-point advantage.
After trailing 32-20 at the intermission, Washington State twice got within seven points early in the second half, only to see the Golden Bears push their lead back to 17.
Miller's 3-pointer capped a 7-0 run as Washington State got within 58-52 with 2:34 left, but the hosts never got any closer.
Washington State point guard Isaac Bonton missed his second consecutive game due to a hip injury.
