Cam Mack posted the first triple-double in Nebraska history and the Cornhuskers pulled away late for a 70-56 Big Ten victory against Purdue on Sunday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb.
Mack grabbed a rebound in the final minute to finish with 11 points, 10 boards and 12 assists to lead Nebraska (5-6, 1-1 Big Ten). Dachon Burke scored 18 points and Thorir Thorbjarnarson added 13 in head coach Fred Hoiberg's first Big Ten win.
Trevion Williams posted career highs with 18 points and 16 rebounds for Purdue (6-4, 1-1). Isaiah Thompson added 10 points for the Boilermakers, who slashed a 15-point deficit to 52-50 with eight minutes to play.
The Cornhuskers jumped on the Boilermakers from the start as Thorbjarnarson opened and closed a 12-0 run with 3-pointers.
Purdue reeled off 10 straight points of its own -- capped by Williams' short jumper at the 10:42 mark -- to forge a 12-12 tie.
The Boilermakers took an 18-17 lead on Matt Haarms' free throw with 5:30 left in the first half, but Nebraska responded with the half's last big run.
The Cornhuskers scored 12 in a row in a 2:07 stretch as Mack kept pushing the pace and finding teammates for open shots. Mack dished to Haanif Cheatham for a layup to trigger the run, then Mack found Kevin Cross for a 3-pointer and wrapped things up with a left-handed bullet pass to Matej Kavas for a layup and a 29-18 lead with 2:47 to go.
Nebraska's lead stood at 34-23 at the break as Purdue shot just 22 percent from the field -- including 3 of 18 on 3-pointers.
Both teams picked up the offensive pace in the second half, but Mack remained in control. When he spotted Cheatham open in the corner for a 3-pointer with 16:39 left in the game, Nebraska owned a 42-27 lead that marked Purdue's biggest deficit of the season.
The Boilermakers fought back and pulled within 52-48 on Eric Hunter's 3-pointer with 8:54 to go. Hoiberg called a timeout to stop Purdue's momentum, but Haarms fed Nojel Eastern for a layup to cut the margin to 52-50.
That's as close as the Boilermakers would get as Nebraska scored the next six points. Early in that stretch, Purdue lost Haarms to injury with 6:10 left. Nebraska's Charlie Easley drove to the hoop and got pushed into the paint where he accidentally undercut Haarms, who crashed to the floor. Haarms appeared woozy and needed help walking to the locker room.
