Dayton 87, Boston College 71: Freshman Dyshawn Pierre scored 23 points, making all eight shots from the field in his first collegiate start, as the Flyers put away the Eagles in the consolation round of the Charleston (S.C.) Classic.

Devin Oliver recorded 17 points, Jalen Robinson came off the bench to score 15 and Kevin Dillard added 14 as Dayton (2-1) shot 61.8 percent from the field. Pierre made five of the team’s eight 3-pointers. The Flyers will play Auburn in the fifth-place game Sunday.

Joe Rahon scored 16 points, Ryan Anderson added 14 and Patrick Heckmann 13 for Boston College (1-2), which hit nine of its 23 attempts beyond the arc. The Eagles will play Charleston for seventh place Sunday.

Boston College led 23-20 before Dayton took over by tracking down most of the loose balls and winning the battle on the boards. The Flyers scored 17 of the last 20 points to take a 37-26 halftime lead, with 10 points each from Pierre and Robinson.

The Eagles were outrebounded 20-11 in the first half and Anderson, their leading scorer, had just four points on 2-of-6 from the field. Boston College never got closer than nine in the second half.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Dayton’s leading scorer entering the game, Vee Sanford, was held scoreless in the first half, but chipped in with 10 in the second half. He added eight rebounds and six assists for the Flyers. … The Flyers are 17-8 against BCS conference opponents the last five-plus seasons. … Boston College averaged 59.3 points last season and has scored 229 in the first three games.
