Oregon State 71, New Mexico State 62: Ahmad Starks scored 19 of his career-high 33 points in the first half and the Beavers staved off a late rally by the visiting Aggies to record their second straight win.

New Mexico State led by six with 9:55 left in the first half before Starks scored 17 of the Beavers’ next 29 points to put Oregon State (2-0) ahead 41-30 at halftime. Starks finished 11-of-21 from the field with two 3-pointers.

Daniel Mullings and Tyrone Watson had 14 points apiece for New Mexico State (0-1), which trailed by double digits for most of the second half. The Aggies used an 8-0 run to cut the Beavers' lead to 68-62 with 55 seconds to play, but Starks hit three free throws to secure the victory.

Joe Burton scored 13 points for Oregon State, which shot 25 for 59 (42.4 percent) from the field. Roberto Nelson added nine points after scoring a game-high 22 in the Beavers’ season opener against Niagara on Friday.

Bandja Sy had 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Aggies, who were picked to finish first in the Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll. New Mexico State made just one of its 11 shots from 3-point range.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Oregon State’s Devon Collier, last year’s Pac-12 leader in field-goal percentage, fouled out with eight minutes remaining and zero points. … New Mexico State's 7-foot-5, 355-pound freshman center Sim Bhullar had one point and two rebounds in 15 minutes. … The Aggies lost their season opener for the first time in the last four years.
