Joe Harris scored 24 points and Mike Scott added 17 points and 12 rebounds as Virginia came from behind to upset No. 13 Minnesota 87-79, Monday in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
Mustapha Farrakhan chipped in 23 points for the Cavaliers (4-3), who entered the game having dropped three of four, including a 43-point loss to the only other ranked team that had played thus far - No. 11 Washington.
The Golden Gophers (6-1) looked like they had control in the first half, taking a 39-29 lead into the break and stretching it to 42-29 on the first possession of the second. But Virginia began to change the tone after that, chipping away with a 20-6 run and taking its first lead on Will Sherrill’s 3-pointer at the 13:29 mark, 49-48.
The Cavaliers did not stop there, ripping off another 19-6 burst to push the lead to 68-54. Harris scored 17 points in the second half while Scott had 10.
Trevor Mbakwe finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota, which will not face another BCS conference school until Big Ten play begins at Wisconsin on December 28.
