Defenseman Neal Pionk scored the tiebreaking goal on a terrific end-to-end rush with 2:44 remaining in the third period, and the New York Rangers overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the visiting Montreal Canadiens 5-3 Tuesday night.

Twenty seconds after a questionable hooking penalty to New York's Jimmy Vesey that wiped out a Rangers power play and infuriated coach David Quinn, Pionk gave the hosts their first lead of the game.

Pionk started the play by gaining possession behind the Rangers' net and glided through, easily getting past Jonathan Drouin and Noah Juulsen. He sped through the slot and went to his forehand to lift the puck by Carey Price's right pad while falling to the ice.

Pionk's coast-to-coast rush lifted the Rangers to their fourth straight win in a game in which they trailed 3-1 with 13:33 left in the second period and went 0-for-6 on the power play.

Fifty-six seconds after Pionk electrified the building, Mika Zibanejad finished off the comeback with a short-handed goal.

New York's Pavel Buchnevich scored the tying goal 8:25 into the third by chipping a loose puck under Price. The goal occurred after defenseman Tony DeAngelo scored late in the second period.

Kevin Hayes set a career high with three assists by setting up Chris Kreider's first-period tally before earning helpers on the goals by DeAngelo and Buchnevich.

Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves and picked up his 436th career victory.

Tomas Tatar scored 23 seconds into the game and early in the second to record his second two-goal game of the season. Max Domi put Montreal up 3-1 with a power-play goal.

Price made several saves on odd-man rushes before allowing three goals in the third. He set a season high by allowing five goals, and he finished with 27 saves.

Montreal opened the scoring as Tatar ripped a wrist shot from the right circle that deflected off Lundqvist's left pad.

About five minutes after Vesey was robbed by consecutive pad saves from Price, the Rangers tied the game when Kreider swept a wrist shot over Price's glove into the vacated right side of the net.

Tatar made it 2-1 in the second by redirecting a pass from Phillip Danault over Lundqvist's stick during a scramble in the crease. Domi made it 3-1 by lifting a backhander over a sprawling Lundqvist.

DeAngelo made it a one-goal game with a rising shot from the right point that went off the crossbar with 2:15 remaining in the second.
