Athletics 9, Astros 3: Brett Anderson matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and Jed Lowrie went 3-for-5 with a homer for the second straight game against his former club as visiting Oakland completed a three-game sweep of Houston.
Anderson (1-1) yielded two unearned runs and five hits over six frames, recovering nicely from Tuesday’s hard-luck 2-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Chris Young added a three-run shot and Coco Crisp homered for the third straight game.
Oakland scored against Lucas Harrell (0-2) in each of his final four innings of work, plating two each in the second and third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth. The 27-year-old right-hander lasted 4 1/3 innings, surrendering seven hits and five walks.
Harrell worked himself into trouble in the second when Seth Smith followed consecutive one-out walks with a two-run double to the wall in the gap in right-center, plating Brandon Moss and Young. Lowrie took advantage of the first of Harrell’s three walks in the third, lining a fastball inside the left-field pole for a two-run home run and a 4-0 lead.
Crisp tacked on his third solo homer of the series in the fourth and the Athletics chased Harrell after three consecutive hits with one out in the fifth. Lowrie and Moss each reached on a pair of shallow singles before Young hammered Harrell’s fastball off the back-field wall in left field of Minute Maid Park.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Young belted his 10th career homer against Houston. His .340 batting average against the Astros is his highest against any opponent in which he has logged at least 40 at-bats. … Five of the six starting pitchers the Astros have faced have either set or tied career highs in strikeouts against them. … Lowrie, acquired from the Astros in the off-season, finished the series 7-for-13 with four runs and three RBIs.
