No. 19 Pittsburgh 83, Maryland 79: Lamar Patterson had 28 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals as the Panthers recorded an Atlantic Coast Conference road victory over the Terrapins.
Talib Zanna had 16 points and seven rebounds while James Robinson added 13 points for Pittsburgh (18-2, 6-1 ACC). Cameron Wright scored 12 points for the Panthers, who have won eight of their last nine games entering Monday’s home showdown against No. 18 Duke.
Dez Wells scored 19 points and Jake Layman added 18 for Maryland (11-9, 3-4). Nick Faust scored 13 points off the bench for the Terrapins, who committed 17 turnovers while falling for the fourth time in five games.
Maryland battled back from a 13-point second-half deficit to move within 79-74 with 1:19 remaining. Pittsburgh missed four of six free throws in a 24-second span to keep the door open but the Terrapins were unable to make it a one-possession game down the stretch.
Maryland held a one-point lead with 5:19 left in the first half before the Panthers rolled off the next nine points and ended up taking a 42-37 lead into the break. Pittsburgh stretched the lead to 62-49 on two free throws by Patterson with 11:46 to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Patterson’s career high of 30 points came against Cal Poly on Dec. 21. … Maryland G Seth Allen had eight points on 2-of-9 shooting and is just 10-of-42 from the field over the last four games. … The Panthers collected 10 offensive rebounds and had a 37-28 edge on the boards.
