No. 12 North Carolina 76, Gardner-Webb 59: James Michael McAdoo had career highs of 26 points and 14 rebounds as the host Tar Heels pulled away from the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
Dexter Strickland added 13 points to complement McAdoo’s first career double-double as North Carolina (1-0) won for the 80th time in its last 82 home openers despite 18 turnovers and 47.4 percent shooting from the foul line.
Donta Harper and Max Landis each scored 13 points while Kevin Hartley added 10 rebounds for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, who fell to 0-16 all-time against ACC opponents and 1-9 against ranked foes.
In their first game without NBA first-rounders Harrison Barnes, Tyler Zeller, John Henson and Kendall Marshall, the Tar Heels led 57-39 with 10:34 remaining following J.P. Tokoto’s fast-break dunk.
But Gardner-Webb (0-1) refused to go away and trimmed the deficit to single digits on Isaiah Ivey’s 3-pointer with 4:57 left against a North Carolina team that played as many as four freshmen at the same time. The Tar Heels scored the next eight points to put the game out of reach.
GAME NOTEBOOK: McAdoo’s previous career highs were 17 points and eight rebounds. … Gardner-Webb made five of its first seven field-goal attempts, but misfired on 17 of its next 22. … The Tar Heels grabbed 21 offensive rebounds and held a 33-8 advantage in second-chance points.
