Jose Iglesias drove in three runs and the Detroit Tigers overcame the early loss of starting pitcher Mike Fiers to collect a 7-4 win over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park.
Fiers left the game after two innings with a left lower shin contusion. He was struck by a Mason Williams liner in the second and pitched to two more batters before departing.
Drew VerHagen (2-2) replaced Fiers and tossed three scoreless innings while getting credited with the victory. Shane Greene recorded the last three outs for his 23rd save.
Jim Adduci homered and scored twice while Ronny Rodriguez contributed two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. JaCoby Jones added two hits and an RBI for Detroit.
Curt Casali had a two-run double for Cincinnati, which dropped both games of the series. Sal Romano (6-9) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the second. Jeimer Candelario and Adduci singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Iglesias then drilled a double down the left-field line to bring home both runners.
Adduci drilled a hanging breaking ball from Romano over the right-field wall to make it 3-0 in the fourth.
Detroit doubled its lead in the sixth. John Hicks singled with one out and scored on Rodriguez's double. Rodriguez took third on the throw home and Iglesias singled past a drawn-in infield for a 5-0 lead.
Iglesias steamed into third on Jones' two-out single and scored on left fielder Phillip Ervin's errant throw.
Detroit nearly gave away the lead in the seventh as the Reds scored four runs. Alex Wilson gave up five hits without recording an out, including Preston Tucker's RBI single and Casali's two-run double. Billy Hamilton singled off Louis Coleman to cut the Tigers' advantage to 6-4.
First baseman Rodriguez then made a big play. After Jose Peraza was thrown out on a comebacker, Rodriguez fired home to cut down Casali as he tried to score.
Jones' eight-inning RBI single brought in the Tigers' final run.
