Padres 6, Reds 1 (Game 2): Rene Rivera hit a go-ahead two-run homer and Tyson Ross pitched seven solid innings as San Diego defeated host Cincinnati to gain a split of a doubleheader.
Everth Cabrera and Yonder Alonso also homered for the Padres, who have won five of their last six games. Alonso and Chase Headley also contributed run-scoring singles as San Diego bounced back from being blanked by Johnny Cueto in a 5-0 loss earlier in the day.
Ross (5-3) struck out eight and gave up one run, three hits and five walks before exiting. Nick Vincent and Kevin Quackenbush each pitched an inning of scoreless relief as the Padres took two of three to win a road series for the first time this season.
The Reds scored without a hit in the first inning as Billy Hamilton walked, stole second and third and raced home on Brandon Phillips’ infield out. Cameron Maybin hit a two-out single off Jeff Francis (0-1) in the second and Rivera followed with a blast over the left-field fence to put the Padres ahead.
Headley’s third-inning ground single made it 3-1 and Alonso singled in a run in the sixth. Cabrera lined a homer to left in the seventh and Alonso delivered a booming shot to right in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Reds recalled Francis from Triple-A Louisville earlier in the day and he allowed three runs and five hits in five innings. … San Diego traded 1B/OF Kyle Blanks to Oakland for minor-league OF Jake Goebbert and a player to be named. … Cincinnati 3B Todd Frazier went 3-for-7 in the doubleheader to extend his career-best hitting streak to 14 games.
