Braves 7, Mets 5: Chipper Jones extended his hitting streak to 14 games and hit his 461st career homer as host Atlanta opened the second half with its fifth straight victory.
Jones finished 2-for-4 with a double and his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot in the sixth. The Braves built a 5-0 lead, survived a New York rally that saw it cut to 5-4, then pulled away. Backup catcher David Ross went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer in the second, finishing with three walks and four RBIs.
Cristhian Martinez (4-1) got the victory in relief after Tim Hudson gave up four runs in the fourth inning. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 26th save.
Jones, who is retiring at season’s end, hit his 49th career homer against the Mets. He is tied with Mike Schmidt for second all-time in RBIs by a third baseman at 1,595, one behind leader George Brett.
Ross walked with the bases loaded in the first and blasted his fourth homer of the season in the third as Atlanta built a 5-0 advantage. But the Mets rallied in the fourth as Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled home two runs and scored on Ruben Tejada’s single to bring New York within 5-4.
Jones’ homer pushed the lead to 6-4 and Dan Uggla’s run-scoring single later in the inning made it 7-4.
New York starter Chris Young (2-3) lasted just three innings, allowing six hits and five runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Hudson surrendered eight hits and four runs in four innings, walking two and striking out three.
New York’s David Wright went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .353. Tejada and Scott Hairston each finished with two hits.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The game was delayed 16 minutes by a power outage in the second inning that knocked out the lights. … Ross started for Brian McCann, who missed the game following the birth of his first child, a son. … One game after Atlanta lost SS Andrelton Simmons to a fractured right pinkie, backup SS Jack Wilson dislocated his pinkie in the fourth inning.
