Blue Jays 8, Yankees 7 (11): Pinch runner Mike McCoy scored the winning
run on a weak infield groundout in the 11th inning as visiting
Toronto halted its seven-game losing streak.
In a game featuring seven home runs, including a pair of dramatic
ninth-inning blasts, rookie Adeiny Hechavarria's slow roller plated the
winning run as McCoy alertly broke for home after Hechavarria was thrown
out at first.
Yorvit Torrealba had three hits, including a two-run homer and a leadoff
single in the 11th to spark the winning rally off Derek Lowe (8-11),
who made a wild pickoff throw to allow McCoy to advance to third.
Darren Oliver (3-2) worked two hitless innings, striking out three, for the win after Casey Janssen blew the save in the ninth.
Slumping Colby Rasmus belted a three-run homer with two outs in the top
of the ninth to put the Blue Jays ahead 7-6, but Yankees captain Derek
Jeter tied it in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homer to force
extra frames.
Adam Lind, in his first game since returning from the disabled list,
homered and had two hits as Toronto won for only the sixth time in its
last 27 games.
Robinson Cano belted a pair of homers and Nick Swisher added a two-run
blast for the Yankees, who lost for the fifth time in seven games.
Jays starter Henderson Alvarez was knocked out of the game with one out
in the fourth inning when he took a hard shot off his left shin. Yankees
starter David Phelps allowed four runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cano's first homer was the 170th of his career, pushing
him past Tony Lazzeri for the most by a second baseman in franchise
history. It was his ninth career multi-homer game. ... Alvarez was
listed as day-to-day with a shin contusion. He gave the Blue Jays a
scare in the second inning when he attempted to barehanded a comebacker
by Eric Chavez in the bottom of the second. ... The Yankees acquired
OF/1B Steve Pearce from Houston for cash considerations. Pearce play for
New York's Triple-A affiliate earlier this year before he was traded to
Baltimore and claimed on waivers by the Astros after the Orioles
designated him for assignment. ... Jays slugger Jose Bautista, who went
back on the disabled list after aggravating a wrist injury Saturday, was
examined by a wrist specialist Monday in Cleveland. He's expected to
rejoin the team Tuesday. ... Little League World Series champion Japan
was at Yankee Stadium and received applause from the fans. ... Rasmus
singled in the sixth for only his second hit in 40 at-bats. He had
struck out in 16 of his previous 18 at-bats.
