Dustin Ackley drove in three runs and scored two more, and Mike Carp homered as the Seattle Mariners pounded the host Cleveland Indians 12-7 in the back end of Tuesday’s day-night doubleheader.
Franklin Gutierrez chipped in three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Trayvon Robinson went 4-for-5 as the Mariners bounced back a few hours after squandering a ninth-inning lead in the opener.
Seattle’s 12 runs marked their second-highest total of the season and most since beating the Detroit Tigers 13-3 on April 19. It was only the third time this season that the Mariners, who rank last in the majors in most offensive categories, have reached double figures in runs.
Zach McAllister (0-1) was recalled from the minors to make a spot start for Cleveland and fell apart in the third when he surrendered five runs. The Mariners would knock McAllister out with five more runs in the fourth.
Anthony Vasquez (1-0) made his major league debut for Seattle and lasted long enough to earn the win. He yielded six runs - five earned - in 5 1/3 innings.
Shin-Soo Choo, who hit a walk-off homer in the opener, added a solo blast in the nightcap for the Indians, who fell six games behind Detroit in the American League Central.
