Dirk Nowitzki collected 28 points and 13 rebounds and ageless Jason Kidd added 12 points and 18 assists Wednesday as the Dallas Mavericks took care of the Charlotte Bobcats, 101-86, in the season opener for both teams.
Jason Terry proved to be just as comfortable in the starting lineup as he had been coming off the bench in the past with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting for the Mavericks, who shot 55 percent (41-of-75).
Nowitzki scored 14 points in just over seven minutes from the start of the third quarter as Dallas began the second half with a 25-10 run to push its lead to 74-55. Charlotte never seriously threatened again.
The Mavericks had little trouble knocking down shots against the Bobcats, who had one of the best defenses in the league last season. Nowitzki made 11-of-13 shots and the 37-year-old Kidd sank 5-of-8, including 2-of-5 from the arc.
Tyson Chandler, a big part of Charlotte's defense in the second half of the 2009-10 season who came to Dallas in a four-team trade this summer, worked his old team for eight points and eight boards while blocking two shots.
Tyrus Thomas scored 22 points off the bench and Gerald Wallace added 16 for the Bobcats.
