Liam Robbins had 22 points and eight rebounds as No. 23 Minnesota avenged a loss to No. 7 Michigan 10 days earlier and handed the Wolverines their first defeat of the season with a 75-57 victory at Minneapolis on Saturday.
Marcus Carr contributed 17 points, six assists and five rebounds for Minnesota (11-4, 4-4 Big Ten). Gabe Kalscheur added 10 points, while Brandon Johnson had eight points and six rebounds.
Chaundee Brown's 14 points topped Michigan (11-1, 6-1). Isaiah Livers had 11 points and nine rebounds, Hunter Dickinson added nine points and Franz Wagner chipped in eight points with nine rebounds.
The Wolverines were missing starting guard Eli Brooks, who strained his right foot in practice this week.
Michigan won the first meeting 82-57 on Jan. 6 but it never held a lead in the rematch. It shot 39.3 percent from the field and made just 6 of 22 3-point attempts on Saturday.
The Golden Gophers were playing a ranked opponent for the seventh consecutive game. Their defense sparkled on Saturday, as they forced 20 turnovers that they converted into 23 points. Offensively, Minnesota made 46.8 percent of its field goal attempts.
Carr converted a three-point play with 17 minutes to go, giving the Golden Gophers a 10-point lead at 35-25. Robbins soon hit a pair of 3-pointers to nudge the lead to 41-30. Dunks by Robbins and Carr gave Minnesota a 48-35 lead with 11:58 left.
Carr's layup with 8:51 left made it 56-42. Robbins' 3-pointer with seven minutes to go stretched the Golden Gophers' lead to 61-44.
Minnesota led by as much as 12 in the first half and emerged with a 30-23 halftime advantage.
Turnovers were a major factor, as the Wolverines committed 11 while the Gophers had just three.
Minnesota misfired on all 11 of its 3-point attempts during the half but Michigan wasn't much better, going 2-for-9 from long range. No player on either side had more than six points at the break.
