Hunter Dickinson scored a career-high 20 points and added seven rebounds to lead Michigan to a 62-58 win over visiting Penn State in the Big Ten opener for both teams on Sunday.
Eli Brooks scored 12 points and Isaiah Livers added 10 points for Michigan, which has won six straight to start the year.
Izaiah Brockington scored 14 points and Sam Sessoms and Myreon Jones each added 10 points in defeat for Penn State (3-2).
Trailing 58-56, Dickinson scored back-to-back baskets to give Michigan a 60-58 lead with 1:21 left.
Following two missed free throws by Michigan's Terrance Williams with 24.3 seconds left, Penn State had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Sessoms couldn't convert an over-the-shoulder layup attempt, and the ball was rebounded by Livers.
Following a foul, Livers converted two free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining to give Michigan a 62-58 lead and essentially end the game.
Leading 24-19, Michigan gained some separation late in the first half, going on a 12-2 run over a span of 2:53 to take a 36-21 lead 2:14 remaining until halftime.
Penn State ultimately cut the deficit to 36-27 at halftime, and continued its momentum to start the second half.
The Nittany Lions started the second half on a 12-2 run to take a 39-38 lead with 16:36 remaining in the game.
After Penn State took a 49-48 lead, Michigan countered with an 8-2 run to take a 56-50 lead with 5:06 remaining.
Penn State answered with a run of its own, scoring eight unanswered to take a 58-56 lead with 2:53 remaining.
Michigan went only 5 of 14 from 3-point range and committed 16 turnovers, but went 17-of-20 from the free throw line and played solid defense.
Penn State finished 30.8 percent from the field overall (20 of 65) and 36.8 percent from 3-point range (7 of 19).
