Senior guard Rapheal Davis scored 18 points, sophomore point guard P.J. Thompson came off the bench for 15 points and No. 21 Purdue pulled away in the final 10 minutes for an 85-70 victory against Florida on Sunday in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic championship game in Uncasville, Conn.
It is the first tournament championship for the Boilermakers since the 2009 Paradise Jam when Purdue defeated Tennessee in the title game in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
An Isaac Haas jump hook with 12:04 remaining extended the Purdue lead to 59-49. The Gators countered with a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 59-56.
Back to back 3-pointers from guard Dakota Mathias and Thompson pushed the Purdue lead to 69-60 with 7:39 remaining.
The Boilermakers (5-0) made 11 shots from 3-point range, including 7 of 15 in the first half. Sophomore forward Vince Edwards added 14 for the Boilermakers.
Thompson came off the bench for 10 first-half points, and the Boilermakers led 43-38 through 20 minutes.
Center John Egbuno scored 19 for Florida (3-1).
