Federico Mussini scored 11 points to lead St. John's in a 48-44 win over non-conference opponent Niagara on Wednesday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y.
Mussini, a freshman guard, averaged 17.3 points through his first six collegiate games but had just five and six, respectively, in his last two games entering Wednesday.
Redshirt junior Christian Jones had 10 points and seven boards for the Red Storm (6-3), who won three of four heading into Sunday's game against Syracuse at Madison Square Garden.
St. John's won despite shooting 33.3 percent (19-of-57) and committing 18 turnovers.
Emile Blackman, a redshirt junior guard, scored 16 points and sophomore guard Matt Scott contributed 14 points and 16 rebounds for Niagara (3-7), which shot 25.0 percent (14-of-56).
St. John's led 27-20 at halftime. Scott's jumper with 0:16 to play brought the Purple Eagles within 48-44, but Red Storm graduate swingman Ron Mvouika's free throw sealed it.
