No. 22 Dayton 63, Richmond 60: Dyshawn Pierre recorded 16 of his season-high 21 points in the first half as the host Flyers held on late to defeat the Spiders.
Kendall Pollard chipped in with 14 points for Dayton (16-3, 6-1 Atlantic 10), which secured its 16th consecutive home victory despite shooting 6-of-22 from the field in the second half after going 15-for-22 prior to intermission. Scoochie Smith added 10 points while Jordan Sibert battled foul trouble and finished with eight – half of his team-leading 16.1-point average.
T.J. Cline led the way with 14 points for Richmond (10-9, 3-3), which has dropped 10 in a row on the road. ShawnDre' Jones, Alonzo Nelson-Ododa and Terry Allen each contributed 11 points for the Spiders, who have dropped five of the road contests this season by six or fewer points.
Pierre scored nine of his team’s final 11 points in the first half as Dayton took a 10-point advantage into the break. The Flyers resisted Richmond’s initial second-half charge as the Spiders connected on their first four field-goal attempts, but Cline knocked down two triples and scored the next 10 points as Richmond pulled ahead for the first time at 47-46 with just under 11 minutes to go.
Dayton, which missed 9-of-10 shots during the Spiders’ 15-2 surge, halted their field-goal woes on Smith’s 3-pointer with five minutes left and got two free throws by Pollard to tie it at 55-55. Pollard hit a jumper on the next possession and the Flyers sandwiched four free throws around a basket by Kyle Davis to make it 63-60 with 14 seconds left before surviving a potential game-tying 3-point attempt from Jones in the waning seconds.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Since averaging 78.3 points in its first three conference games, Dayton has scored 63 or fewer points in its last four contests. … Richmond leading scorer G Kendall Anthony finished with nine points after averaging 18.8 points over his previous eight contests. … The Flyers have won 16 of their last 18 regular-season Atlantic-10 games.
