UCLA 76, Tulsa 59: Jordan Adams had 21 points and eight rebounds as the Bruins rolled past the Golden Hurricane in a second-round NCAA tournament game in San Diego.
Norman Powell scored 15 points and Tony Parker added 11 points and six rebounds for fourth-seeded UCLA (27-8), which forced 16 turnovers and advanced to Sunday’s third-round game in the South regional against No. 12 seed Stephen F. Austin. Kyle Anderson collected eight points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals as the Bruins snapped Tulsa’s 11-game winning streak.
D'Andre Wright paced No. 13 seed Tulsa (21-13) with 18 points while James Woodard added 11 points and nine rebounds. The Golden Hurricane rallied from a 14-point deficit midway through the second half before UCLA finished the game on a 17-5 run.
UCLA built on the momentum of last Saturday’s win over Arizona in the Pac-12 tournament title game and led 35-30 at the break before opening the second half on a 10-2 run. Tulsa, which held its previous 15 opponents to an average of 59.5 points, fell behind 57-43 on Travis Wear’s dunk with just over nine minutes remaining.
The Golden Hurricane responded with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 59-54 with just under five minutes left, but UCLA answered with eight straight points and improved to 26-0 this season when leading with five minutes remaining. Tulsa, making its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2003, was held to 36.8 percent shooting from the field but made seven of its 19 shots from 3-point range
GAME NOTEBOOK: UCLA improved to 20-2 when leading at the half. … Powell, a San Diego native, contributed four rebounds and three steals while scoring six points in the final five minutes. … Travis Wear made all five of his field goals and finished with 10 points for UCLA, which shot 13-of-15 from the foul line and recorded 11 steals.
