Ashton Gibbs scored 16 points and sealed the victory with a huge defensive play as No. 17 Pittsburgh survived host Tennessee 61-56 on Saturday.
Gibbs tied up Trae Golden to force a dead ball possession change with 3.6 seconds to go and the Panthers clinging to a 58-56 lead.
Pittsburgh (6-1) led by eight with less than a minute to go, but the Volunteers narrowed the gap to two points after a 3-pointer by Golden with 11.6 seconds remaining. Tennessee couldn’t pull even, however, and lost its third game to a ranked opponent under first-year coach Cuonzo Martin.
