Indians 4, Astros 2: Corey Kluber struck out a career-high 14 over seven innings and Yan Gomes belted a two-run homer as visiting Cleveland snapped a four-game losing skid.
Lonnie Chisenhall scored the go-ahead run on an error in the fourth inning for the Indians, who kept their flickering postseason aspirations alive by moving five games behind Kansas City in the race for the American League's second wild card. Carlos Santana, Michael Bourn and Chisenhall each had a single and scored a run in the victory.
Houston's Jose Altuve doubled in the fifth inning before his two-out single in the seventh gave him 211 hits, eclipsing Craig Biggio's franchise record for a single season. Marwin Gonzalez had an RBI single among his two hits and scored on Alex Presley's base hit in the eighth, but the Astros saw their five-game home winning streak come to a halt.
Kluber (16-9) capped his impressive performance by striking out Dexter Fowler with two on in the seventh as Cleveland nursed a 4-1 lead. The 28-year-old allowed one run on seven hits to record his ninth win in 12 decisions while Cody Allen secured the final four outs for his 21st save.
After both teams scratched for a run in the first inning, the Indians seized a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Houston's Robbie Grossman flubbed a ground ball in the left-center field gap, allowing Chisenhall to score from first base. Gomez increased the advantage in the sixth after jumping on a 1-1 fastball from Darin Downs, who relieved Nick Tropeano (1-1) after the latter permitted two runs (one earned) on four hits in five innings to take the loss in his second career start.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Altuve's double extended his home hitting streak to 15 games. ... Cleveland OF Nick Swisher and Houston C Jason Castro were named among the 30 nominees for the Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes the player who best represents the game through positive contributions on and off the field - including sportsmanship and community involvement. ... Houston elected to shut down rookie OF George Springer for the remainder of the season due to a quadriceps strain.
