Yankees 6, Giants 0: Ivan Nova overcame his September struggles with his second career shutout while Eduardo Nunez and Alfonso Soriano homered as host New York cruised past San Francisco.

Nova (9-5) entered Saturday with an 0-1 record and a 7.07 ERA in three starts this month but scattered six hits and struck out seven for his first win in four outings. The victory kept the Yankees three games behind Cleveland for the second American League wild-card spot with seven contests remaining.

Ryan Vogelsong (3-6) gave up five runs in five frames to remain winless since Aug. 25. Brandon Belt and Pablo Sandoval each doubled and finished with two hits for the Giants, who have scored one run over the first two contests of the three-game interleague series.

Vogelsong retired the first six hitters he faced but gave up three runs in the third, as Mark Reynolds and Brendan Ryan singled before former Giant Chris Stewart drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Ichiro Suzuki followed with a sacrifice fly, Alex Rodriguez plated Ryan with a groundout and Robinson Cano capped the rally with an RBI single to left field.

New York added two more runs in the fourth as Curtis Granderson opened with a single and Nunez hammered a first-pitch fastball to left for his second homer of the season. Guillermo Moscoso relieved Vogelsong to begin the sixth, and Soriano greeted him with his 17th home run since joining the Yankees on July 26.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Soriano’s 17 homers and 50 RBIs since his July trade from the Chicago Cubs are both league-high marks over that span. Soriano, who had 51 RBIs with the Cubs, also became only the fifth player in major-league history to drive in 50 or more runs with two different teams in the same season. … The Giants did not get a baserunner past second against Nova and are batting .206 in the series. … Nova improved to 7-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 11 career interleague starts, including 3-0 with a 1.04 ERA in four outings against the National League this season.
