Red Sox 6, White Sox 2: Clay Buchholz worked seven strong innings and David Ortiz drove in a pair as visiting Boston avoided a three-game sweep at Chicago.
Will Middlebrooks added an RBI and Dustin Pedroia doubled and scored in support of Buchholz (7-0), who allowed one run and five hits in snapping a three-start winless streak. Daniel Nava put the game away with a two-run single in the ninth as the Red Sox finished up their nine-game trip 6-3.
Hector Santiago (1-3) struck out nine and allowed two runs in six innings while working on three days’ rest for the White Sox, who scratched ace Chris Sale due to mild shoulder tendinitis. Paul Konerko snapped a 17-game homerless drought with a solo blast in the ninth.
Boston got Buchholz two runs in the first inning, when Jonny Gomes was hit by a pitch with one out and Pedroia followed with a double. Ortiz dropped a bloop single into short left to chase home the pair.
Chicago got one back on Alex Rios’ RBI groundout in the third but could not push anything else across until the ninth despite getting the lead runner on in five of the first seven frames. The Red Sox tacked on some insurance in the eighth on Middlebrooks’ sacrifice fly and a passed ball that allowed Mike Napoli to score from third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston CF Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-3 to record his first multi-hit game since May 4. … White Sox DH Adam Dunn will appear in a movie this fall starting Matthew McConaughey.
