Cardinals 1, White Sox 0: Lance Lynn worked into the eighth inning and struck out a career-high 12 batters as St. Louis snapped Chicago’s eight-game road winning streak.
Lynn (10-2) gave up three hits with one walk on 112 pitches to join the New York Mets’ R.A. Dickey as the majors’ only 10-game winners. Jason Motte worked around two baserunners in the ninth for his 12th save.
Carlos Beltran provided the only run the Cardinals would need in the third inning with a solo homer off Jake Peavy (6-2), who struck out six over seven innings.
Lynn, who has 23 strikeouts in his last two games, escaped a jam in the top of the fifth when he struck out the side after Alex Rios tripled to lead off the inning.
One game after striking out a career-high 11, Lynn began the eighth inning with his 12th strikeout before giving up a single to Orlando Hudson.
Marc Rzepczynski followed Lynn and got pinch-hitter Adam Dunn to ground into a double play to end the inning, one game after he gave up a solo blast to Dunn in Tuesday's series opener.
Beltran went 3-for-4 and made a diving catch in center field for the Cardinals, who won for the fifth time in their last 14 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lynn became the first Cardinals’ pitcher with at least 11 strikeouts in back-to-back starts since Alan Benes in 1997. …. Cardinals SS Rafael Furcal is hitless in his last 19 at-bats after going 0-for-4. … Beltran has hit the Cardinals’ last three home runs, all with nobody on base. … Dunn was scratched from the starting lineup with a sprained ankle. … Chicago fell to 18-10 on the road.
