Blues 4, Rangers 3 (SO): Vladimir Tarasenko scored a highlight-reel goal in the second period before ending the shootout in the third round as visiting St. Louis skated to its fifth consecutive victory.
New York's Rick Nash nearly ended the contest on two occasions in overtime as his wrist shot from the left circle hit the post at 45 seconds before he was denied by the right pad of Brian Elliott (36 saves) three minutes later. Lee Stempniak and Alex Steen each scored in the second round of the shootout and Elliott used a poke check to thwart Nash to set the stage for Tarasenko, who breezed in and wristed a shot past the right pad of Cam Talbot.
Named the NHL's First Star of the Week, Tarasenko had an assist in addition to his sixth goal in four contests. Patrik Berglund also tallied and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester scored to snap a 44-game goalless drought for the Blues, who have won four straight at Madison Square Garden and eight of their last 10 meetings with the Rangers.
Martin St. Louis recorded his 52nd career two-goal performance by scoring twice in the third period for the Rangers, who suffered their second straight shootout loss. Chris Kreider also tallied in his 100th NHL game and Talbot turned aside 31 shots while making his second start.
With the Blues nursing a 2-1 lead, New York's St. Louis tallied twice under seven minutes apart as he slammed home Carl Hagelin's behind-the-net feed at 6:28 before redirecting Nash's saucer pass at the left doorstep. Bouwmeester's wrist shot from the slot beat Talbot under the crossbar to forge a tie with 5:27 remaining in the third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: After Kreider opened the scoring in the first period, Tarasenko answered with a power-play goal of his own, skating around D Dylan McIlrath before extending his stick to tuck the puck past the outstretched pad of Talbot at 7:18 of the second. ... New York's Mats Zuccarello sat out with an undisclosed injury and was replaced in the lineup by RW Ryan Malone, who had one shot on goal in 7:39 of ice time. ... McIlrath recorded nine penalty minutes while logging just 8:02 of ice time.
