Bruins 4, Maple Leafs 1: David Krejci led the way with a goal and two assists as host Boston dominated Game 1 of its Eastern Conference first-round series with Toronto.
Defenseman Wade Redden added a goal and an assist while Nathan Horton and blue-liner Johnny Boychuk also scored for the fourth-seeded Bruins, who host the Maple Leafs in Game 2 on Saturday. Tuukka Rask made 19 saves in his first playoff start since May 14, 2010.
James van Riemsdyk opened the scoring on the power play and James Reimer stopped 36 shots in his first career playoff start for fifth-seeded Toronto, which fell to 3-11-2 in its last 16 visits to Boston.
The Bruins rebounded after van Riemsdyk drew a tripping penalty on Patrice Bergeron and put a backhand shot past Rask 1:54 into the contest. Redden blasted a loose puck in the left faceoff circle at 16:20 and Horton tipped Redden’s point shot on the doorstep with 12 seconds remaining in the period.
Krejci extended the lead midway through the second period when he spun in the slot and flipped a wrist shot around Reimer. Boychuk slapped a shot from the point that eluded Reimer 5:19 later and Rask only needed six saves in the final 20 minutes to preserve the victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Bergeron appeared to give Boston a 5-1 lead midway through the third period when he poked a loose puck behind Reimer, but officials were in the act of calling the play dead and denied the goal. … Toronto has not won at TD Garden since a 3-2 shootout victory on March 31, 2011. … Krejci, who led Boston in scoring during its 2011 Stanley Cup championship run with 23 points, struggled in April with only five in 14 games. … Toronto Fs Colton Orr and Leo Komarov combined for 31 minutes in penalties during the game. ... The Maple Leafs were playing in their first postseason game since 2004.
