Justin Allgeier rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns as Brigham Young defeated Washington State 21-19 in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon in Pullman, Wash., spoiling the head coaching debut of Jake Dickert.
Dickert, previously WSU's defensive coordinator, took over after Nick Rolovich and four assistants were fired Monday for failing to meet Washington Gov. Jay Inslee's mandate that all state employees be vaccinated against COVID-19.
WSU's Max Borghi scored his third touchdown on a 1-yard run with 4:14 remaining, but the host's two-point conversion attempt failed as wide receiver Lincoln Victor was stopped on an end around and then threw incomplete on a desperation pass into the end zone.
Allgeier scored on runs of 4 and 2 yards in the second half as BYU (6-2) snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the fourth time in as many games against a Pacific-12 Conference team this season. Quarterback Jaren Hall was 15-of-20 passing for 143 yards.
Borghi rushed for 83 yards and added 36 more on four receptions for WSU (4-4), which had won its previous three games. QB Jayden de Laura was 26 of 37 for 257 yards with one interception.
Allgeier scored on a 4-yard run around left end on BYU's opening possession of the second half to snap a 7-all tie.
WSU responded with a scoring drive, with Borghi tallying on a 1-yard run, but the snap on the extra point was low and holder Nick Haberer, the punter, attempted a pass into the end zone that fell incomplete.
BYU then put together an 11-play, 81-yard drive, capped by Allgeier's 2-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter, to make it 21-13.
The score was tied 7-7 at the half after both teams scored on their opening possessions.
WSU took the kickoff and went 75 yards in 10 plays, capped by an 11-yard touchdown run up the middle by Borghi. De Laura was 5 for 5 on the drive for 51 yards.
BYU responded with its own 75-yard drive, only in nine plays. Lopini Katoa scored on a 3-yard run around the left end to tie it with 6:04 remaining in the first quarter.
