Oregon State used a 22-6 first-half run to pull away from San Jose State en route to an 83-46 win on Wednesday night in Las Vegas.
Four players scored in double figures for Oregon State (6-1), all starters. Ethan Thompson led the Beavers with 17 points. Alfred Hollins had 16 points, Tres Tinkle 15, and Zach Reichle 10. The other starter, Kylor Kelley, blocked four shots and scored two points.
Samuel Japhet-Mathias was the only San Jose State player to score in double figures. He finished with 10 points. Christian Anigwe grabbed 14 rebounds for the Spartans (3-4).
The Beavers led the Spartans just 23-18 with 9:57 left in the first half. The Beavers then uncorked their big run to take a 45-24 lead at halftime.
The game continued to snowball from there for the overwhelmed Spartans, who lost more ground as the second half unfolded.
Oregon State hit its first five field-goal attempts of the second half, and seven out of its first eight, to bump the lead to 63-31 with 15:21 left in the game. San Jose State went just over 12 minutes without a made field goal in the second half, as Oregon State added more points to an already-large advantage.
The Beavers finished 33 of 60 from the field (55 percent). San Jose State made just 18 of 60 field-goal attempts (30 percent). Oregon State hit 11 of 21 from 3-point range, 52.4 percent. San Jose State, in marked contrast, made only 4 of 26 3-point tries, just 15.4 percent.
The wide gulf in made field goals between the two teams affected the final assist-turnover differentials for each team. Oregon State generated 19 assists on its 33 made baskets, against 12 turnovers. San Jose State created just nine assists on its 18 makes, against 18 turnovers.
